Governor Togiola T.A. Tulafono dedicates and opens Ocean Center

Honorable Governor Togiola T.A. Tulafono last Friday officially dedicated and opened the Tauese P.F. Sunia Ocean Center in Utulei. Named after the late Governor Sunia, the center will provide visitors and local residents the opportunity to learn about the natural and cultural resources of American Samoa. The state of the art facility features educational exhibits and interactive learning tools to promote ocean awareness and encourage good marine stewardship. A key feature of the Center is the ‘Science On a Sphere’, a room sized, global display system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a six foot diameter sphere, analogous to a giant animated globe. Researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) developed the ‘Science On a Sphere’ (SOS) as an educational tool to help illustrate Earth System science to people of all ages. The SOS is found in the main 5,236 square foot exhibit area while the adjacent smaller exhibit area (658 square feet) features the Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary exhibit. A small gift shop run by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and office space for staff and volunteers completes the complex. The Ocean Center will officially be open to the public on September 1st and opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.00am – 4.00pm and Saturday 9.00am – 12.00pm. The Center is closed Sunday and holidays. For more information contact Apulu Veronika Mata’utia Mortenson, Education Coordinator & Community Liaison, phone +1-684-633-6500, email veronica.mortenson@noaa.gov. The Tauese P.F. Ocean Center was made possible through the generous support of the American Samoa Department of Commerce, Housing & Urban Development/Community Development Block Grant, American Samoa Reinvestment & Recovery Act and the Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
